Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone announced that several injured players would miss Saturday's La Liga match against Barcelona. However, there's optimism for some returns ahead of their Champions League first-leg fixture at Camp Nou next week.

In his pre-match press conference on Friday, Simeone downplayed the tactical duel with Hansi Flick. He emphasized, "Football revolves around the players, not the coaches. Barcelona has adopted a distinct style under their new coach, characterized by a high defensive line and offensive setups to capitalize on duels. We, with our consistent approach over the past 14 years, will persist in our efforts to compete."

Five Key Players Out for Atlético

Simeone confirmed that Rodrigo Mendoza, Pablo Barrios, Jan Oblak, Marc Pubill, and Johnny Cardoso are all unavailable for the Barcelona match. He provided an update on their recovery, stating, "All injured players are progressing well. Jan [Oblak] and Mendoza are expected to return to group training on Monday. Pablo [Barrios] is also recovering strongly, and Pubill is working diligently to be ready when called upon."

Midfield Challenges for Simeone

Mendoza's absence poses a significant challenge due to the concurrent suspensions of Cardoso and Marcos Llorente, alongside Barrios's injury. This leaves Los Rojiblancos with a depleted midfield, with Koke Resurreccion and Obed Vargas as the sole natural central options. Simeone might need to improvise by deploying Alex Baena or Thiago Almada in the midfield. While Llorente will be available for European fixtures, Cardoso is expected to remain sidelined due to injury.

On a positive note, Oblak, Mendoza, and potentially Pubill are anticipated to be fit for the second leg of their Champions League clash next week. Additionally, Alexander Sorloth, who sustained a head injury during international duty, appears to be available for this weekend's match.
