Martin was initially dismissed for a dangerous studs-up challenge on Thiago Almada. However, following the VAR intervention, his punishment was downgraded to a yellow card. This decision left Atletico's players, coaching staff, and supporters in disbelief, prompting the club's hierarchy to pursue further action.

According to Diario AS, Atletico has now filed an official complaint with the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA), seeking a detailed explanation as to why Martin's red card was overturned. Sources within the club reportedly stated that "it is impossible to compete when some rules are explained and others are applied," underscoring how their indignation regarding refereeing decisions has significantly intensified over the past 24 hours.

Prior to the international break, Atletico also suffered a 2-1 defeat to city rivals Real Madrid. In that match, they felt hard done by when Dani Carvajal's challenge on Marcos Llorente inside the penalty area went unpunished. The incident involving Martin has only exacerbated their frustration, as it meant they played against Barcelona with a numerical disadvantage (10 versus 11) for the entire second half, rather than the expected 10 versus 10.
