Atletico Madrid Rules Out Julian Alvarez Sale to Barcelona, Open to Premier League Bids
Barcelona is actively seeking a new striker this summer, with Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez reportedly being the top choice for presumptive president Joan Laporta. However, a transfer to the Catalan giants appears highly improbable.
Alvarez recently fueled speculation about his future by refusing to guarantee his presence at Atletico next season, suggesting he might be receptive to a move. For nearly a year, Barcelona has been linked with Alvarez as a potential replacement for Robert Lewandowski, whose contract is set to expire.
Despite Barcelona's interest, Atletico Madrid is unwilling to negotiate a transfer deal with their La Liga rivals for Alvarez. The Rojiblancos are reportedly irritated by Barcelona's persistent public pursuit of the player and the ongoing discussions surrounding a potential move from Alvarez's own entourage.
Barcelona understands that a transfer is only feasible if Alvarez himself explicitly pushes for it. While he has hinted at openness to a move, the Catalan club believes a more definitive declaration is necessary, which seems unlikely. Furthermore, club relations are strained following Laporta's decision to replace Sporting Director Mateu Alemany with Deco. Consequently, Barcelona is already exploring other options, deeming a deal for Alvarez challenging.
However, Atletico Madrid might entertain a substantial offer, around €150 million, if it originates from a Premier League club. Both Arsenal and Chelsea have previously expressed interest in Alvarez, though it remains uncertain if they would commit such a significant sum. This figure would represent double the fee Atletico initially paid for the player.
Nonetheless, Atletico Madrid's primary objective is to retain their star forward. Alvarez is under contract until 2029, and the club's intention is to offer him a contract extension.
