Sevilla has officially announced the termination of manager Matias Almeyda's contract after a brief tenure of only 32 matches. Speculation regarding the Argentine coach's future intensified following a 2-0 home defeat to Valencia on Saturday night, culminating in the Sevilla board's decision to part ways on Monday.

Almeyda, who was appointed last summer by new Sporting Director Antonio Cordon, was relieved of his duties, as confirmed by a brief club statement expressing gratitude for his contributions. During his time, Almeyda's team recorded 10 wins, 7 draws, and 15 losses across 32 games. While they managed to score 43 goals, the defense proved to be a major weakness, conceding 52 times. Notably, the 49 goals conceded in La Liga represent the worst defensive record in the division, despite the team's 37 goals scored placing them ninth offensively.

Relegation Threat Fuels Desire for a Fresh Start

Currently occupying 15th position, Sevilla finds itself precariously close to the relegation zone, holding a mere three-point lead over RCD Mallorca with nine fixtures remaining. The recent loss to Valencia extended their dismal run to just one victory in eight games. Adding to the challenges, Almeyda was serving a seven-game touchline ban, leaving assistant Javi Martinez in charge of coaching duties for the remaining two matches. According to Cadena Cope (via ED), Luis Garcia Plaza, a manager with previous experience at Levante, Alaves, and Mallorca, is considered a strong contender for the vacant position. He has a proven track record of successfully guiding teams out of difficult situations. Other familiar figures, such as Javi Martinez, Manolo Jimenez, or even Joaquin Caparros, are also being discussed as potential candidates to return to the dugout. Sevilla's primary objective is to safeguard their position in La Liga for the upcoming year, as relegation would plunge the club into significant instability, especially amidst an ongoing takeover bid reportedly led by Sergio Ramos.
