Simeone Slams Referee's Gerard Martin Red Card Decision Against Barcelona

Following Atletico Madrid's 2-1 defeat to Barcelona, manager Diego Simeone publicly stated his conviction that the referee's choice not to dismiss Gerard Martin was an error. Despite playing with ten men for a significant part of the game, Los Rojiblancos delivered a spirited performance, ultimately falling short due to a late Robert Lewandowski goal.

The most controversial incident of the match centered on the red card initially shown to Gerard Martin, which was subsequently rescinded after a VAR review. Simeone remained convinced that the Blaugrana defender should have been sent off.

“I was informed, and I also watched the Betis-Rayo incident, and the CTA (Referees Technical Committee) confirmed it was a sending-off. There isn't much more to say; he arrived late and stepped directly on the player's entire ankle. We will see if the CTA revisits their stance. The situation is quite clear.”

“This wasn't about anything against us specifically; they simply made a mistake. Just as managers make errors, players do too. Did you see the Betis-Rayo game, or not? It's perfectly evident.”

When asked about his discussions with the referee at half-time, Simeone clarified that they revolved around the decision to upgrade Nicolas Gonzalez’s second yellow card to a red.

“I conveyed my view that it was a yellow, followed by another yellow, which should result in a red. He, however, interpreted it as two direct red cards.”

Simeone Reflects: "Losing isn't positive, but the performance was good."

Despite the eventual loss, Atletico showcased an impressive first-half display, putting Barcelona under considerable pressure. In the second half, even with a numerical disadvantage, they nearly managed to hold out for a point.

“We can discuss the two halves separately. In the first half, we played exceptionally well. We created many attacking opportunities and showed great intensity. Then came the red card incident, which, in my opinion, was a clear red. In the second half, we were compelled to defend, and we couldn't attack as much as we would have liked. Their winning goal came from a rebound.”

When questioned about finding positives in their performance despite the defeat, Simeone offered a balanced perspective, careful not to overstate his praise for the team.

“Losing is never a positive outcome. However, it is true that the lads’ effort was very commendable. The first half was exceptionally strong, and the effort demonstrated in the second half was immense. The two debutants entered the game at a challenging moment and performed very well. Focusing on these positive aspects is beneficial, but ultimately, a loss remains a loss.”

Upcoming Champions League Tie and Player Debuts

Simeone was also asked about the potential impact of Raphinha’s absence for the Champions League quarter-final, a player he has previously acknowledged for his quality.

“My thoughts aren't on Raphinha; they are entirely on the Champions League quarter-final, playing at their ground, and the significant responsibility that game entails. We must perform better than we did during the Copa del Rey semi-final there, where we struggled to attack, create play, or achieve anything substantial.”

With several Atletico players rested, Simeone introduced academy prospects Taufik Seidu and Javi Morcillo for their senior debuts in the second half.

“It was a suitable moment for their debuts; they brought the necessary energy. And players like Lookman and others benefited from the rest, which was a positive step.”

Los Colchoneros are scheduled to travel to Camp Nou on Wednesday evening to face Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. The return match will take place the following Tuesday at the Metropolitano.
