Spain Adjusts 2030 World Cup Bid, Proposing New Stadiums After Dropouts

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has formally requested the inclusion of two additional venues in its bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, following the withdrawal of two previously selected stadiums. Spain aims to contribute a total of 11 venues to the tournament, though it's anticipated that FIFA may ultimately reject at least one of these proposals.

The combined number of venues for the 2030 World Cup, encompassing Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, is projected to be between 16 and 18. Portugal intends to retain its three chosen stadiums, while Morocco is keen on keeping its six proposed venues, although there's a risk of one being removed.

Riazor and La Rosaleda Withdrawn from World Cup Hosting Consideration

Ahead of FIFA's recent stadium inspections, Malaga's La Rosaleda (Andalusia) and Deportivo La Coruna’s Riazor (Galicia) stadiums have been withdrawn from consideration. Their removal stems from uncertainties surrounding the financial backing required for their respective upgrade projects.

Nou Mestalla and Balaídos Emerge as Potential Replacements

In response to these withdrawals, the RFEF is pushing for the acceptance of the Nou Mestalla project in Valencia as a replacement venue. Valencia's initial exclusion as a host city was a surprise to many, and its new stadium, anticipated to be completed by 2027 or 2028, is widely expected to secure a spot in the final selection. Additionally, the region of Galicia is advocating for the inclusion of Celta Vigo’s Balaídos stadium, though its acceptance is considered less definite.

Spain's Current List of Proposed World Cup Stadiums

The current lineup of Spanish stadiums slated for potential hosting duties includes Camp Nou and the RCDE Stadium (Barcelona), the Metropolitano and the Santiago Bernabéu (Madrid), La Romareda (Zaragoza), San Mamés (Bilbao), the Reale Arena (Donostia-San Sebastian), La Cartuja (Seville), and the Estadio Gran Canaria. However, the future of Estadio Gran Canaria on this list has become less certain following FIFA's inspection.
